Prof. Sanjoy Roy is a Professor and Former Head at the Department of Social Work and Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Delhi, who is advocating for ‘Indigenous Social Work in India’ .  With over two decades of academic and administrative experience, Prof. Roy is a widely respected scholar, educator, and social work practitioner whose work has significantly contributed to areas such as Indian Social Work, social work practice, social justice & human rights, social administration and community development. 

Apart from University of Delhi, Prof Roy has also taught in many Universities of India namely Department of Social Work, Visva Bharati, Schools of Social Work, IGNOU, New Delhi, Department of Social Work, Assam University (Central), Silchar, Department of Social Work, CSJM University, Kanpur. He also worked at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) as Medical Social Worker. Prof Roy was member of Academic Council and Executive Council, University of Delhi.

In addition to his academic leadership, Prof. Roy currently is the Director of the Institute of Life Long Learning (ILLL), University of Delhi and former Provost of the Social Work Department Hostel. He has played key roles in multiple national academic bodies, served on editorial boards of international journals, and acted as a resource person and invited speaker across global platforms. His international collaborations span countries such as Germany, USA, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand & South Korea reflecting his engagement in comparative and global social work education.

Throughout his academic career, he had the honour of delivering keynote addresses, plenary lectures, and invited talks, as well as participating in numerous internationally sponsored conferences, seminars, and collaborative academic programmes across the United Kingdom, London School of Economics, Australia, Germany, France, Panama, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Bangladesh, Qatar, Philippines and several other countries. These engagements have enabled him to contribute to international academic discourse while building meaningful collaborations with universities, professional associations, and research networks.

His scholarly contributions include more than ninety research publications, 18 authored and edited books published by Sage, Routledge, Rawat, Atlantic etc, the supervision of post-doctoral, doctoral research, and leadership in several national and international academic initiatives. He is also serving on the advisory and editorial boards of international journals and academic organizations, including the Encyclopedia of Social Work (National Association of Social Workers, USA), and have reviewed manuscripts for leading international journals such as the British Journal of Social Work, BJSW, Sage etc.

Prof Roy is the Editor in Chief of the Journal, Indian Journal of Social Work Education and Practice (IJSWEP).

Prof. Roy holds a PhD in Social Work and has earned degrees including an M.Phil., MSW, and LLB. His accolades include the University of Delhi Excellence Award (2023),  Dr B R Ambedkar National Award 2023 for outstanding performance in the field of Social Work by Dr. B R Ambedkar Sports Foundation (Organization in Special Consultation Status with United Nations’ Economic and Social Council) at Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, New Delhi, India on 3rd December 2023 and the Bharat Ratna Dr. Radhakrishnan Gold Medal Award (2019). He is affiliated with leading national and international bodies such as NAPSWI and the Indian Society for Professional Social Work, and serves on advisory boards, editorial committees, and academic councils across India and abroad.
